Communities in Schools provides essential support and resources to students in need, helping them succeed in school and beyond. And we need YOU!

Communities in Schools is searching for compassionate volunteers in Rowan County to join our mission and help students discover their limitless potential. Imagine the impact you can make. By sharing your time, wisdom, and kindness, you'll help students unlock their talents, build their confidence, and overcome obstacles. 

Registration is open: Register to become a CIS Volunteer for the 2023-24 school year!

All volunteers must register and complete mandatory training before the school year starts. This applies to all programs, including Rowan Literacy Council.

Background Check

All CIS volunteers must undergo a mandatory Rowan-Salisbury Schools background check before participating in our programs. There may be additional requirements. Click the "Check/Start Background Check" button to start the process and/or check your background approval status.

  • Who needs volunteer certification?
    Volunteers requiring certification for Communities in Schools of Rowan County or Rowan-Salisbury Schools are unpaid individuals assisting with school children as: Mentors Tutors Lunch Buddies Field Trip Chaperones After-School Program Volunteers
  • How to become a Certified Volunteer?
    Choose a training date from the list that you'd like to attend. (No registration required) Undergo a background check. Email or bring a copy of your "Secure Volunteer" card and "driver's license" or state identification to training. Allow approximately 1.5 hours for training. Any necessary paperwork that remains incomplete prior to the training session can be finalized during the training day.
  • What is the address to volunteer training?
    All training will be at the Gateway Building, 204 East Innes Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.
  • Does Communities in Schools of Rowan County follow the Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS) schedule?
    Yes we do. If school has been canceled by RSS due to inclement weather or for any other reason, volunteer training will not be held.
  • Are there exceptions to the volunteer certification requirement?
    No, there are no exceptions to the volunteer certification requirements. All potential volunteers must be trained and certified as a volunteer, as mandated by Communities in Schools of Rowan County and Rowan-Salisbury School System. Certification includes a BIB Criminal Background Check and completion of the in-class child abuse prevention training.
  • Can volunteer certification training dates change?
    Yes, training dates may be added or deleted throughout the year. Please visit our website, www.cisrowan.org, for training updates.
  • How can groups of 5 or more volunteers request a dedicated training date?
    Groups of 5 or more needing special training dates, must contact volunteer@cisrowan.org.
